Cricket - Cobras vs Cougars T10 Report

Batter finishing stroke

On Friday January 12, George Cain Oval hosted the inaugural T10 Match, Churchill Cricket Club vs Churchill Football Club. With the mercury reaching 32 degrees the crowds flocked in to what can only be described as the biggest function hosted by the Cricket Club in recent years.

The Cobras won the toss and in typical King Cobra fashion they chose to bat. Ricky Velardi and Ross Parker (Pom) strode to the crease with the aim of dispatching every ball to the fence. This only lasted three balls for Ricky as he was caught out by Bailey Flanigan off the bowling of former B Grade Captain Jordy Fenech. Enter King Cobra himself who smashed 21 off 10 balls before succumbing to another Bailey catch which brought a knee slide celebration as the King Cobra made his way off.

The Pom and Covers steered the ship as the runs started to rise. Parker retired on 29 off 11 at what can only be described as his best knock for Churchill Cricket Club. Covers was joined at the crease by twin brother Ryan as the Harvey boys took the score above 100. Covers retired on 32 off 22 which brought Kurt Holt to the crease. Kurt rather casual in his approach, strolled out with no pads or shoes on and was quickly bowled by Flanigan before Harry Van Rossum entered and left in the same fashion, without contributing to the score. With Flanigan on a hat trick there was a huge amount of pressure on Lleyton Hecker to see off the hat trick ball, which he managed to do - just.

The Cobras finished their 10 overs with a score of 5/113.

After a quick drinks break the Cougars sent C Grade Premiership player and A Grade Premiership Player Ben Skinner and Ben Kearns to the crease. In typical Skinner fashion he attempted to dispatch the first ball to the fence only to be caught by Van Rossum off the bowling of Chris “Willow” Williams. With the score at 1/0 the Cobras could not have hoped for a better start however the Cougars version of Chris Williams and Ben Skinner had different ideas reaching the boundary rope a combined 14 times before Kearnsy was caught off the bowling of King Cobra for an insane 50 off 19 balls. Chris ‘Squid’ Williams and Jordy Fenech continued to assert dominance as the win drew closer. The Cobras managed to snag a couple of wickets before the Cougars passed the score in the last over.
